NOT SO SECRET :: facing the NOW ::

Brooklyn, NY 11216
This year New Years Eve falls on the full moon, which on top of that is also going to be a blue moon. "Some pagan beliefs hold the second full moon in a calendar month holds the knowledge of the Goddess and contains very powerful three-fold the energy of a regular full moon"[source]. Great timing for AVATAR changing people's vibration. Many of us among my friends are really excited to move forward to the new year, which is going to be very different from 2009.

What I know is that a lot of amazing creative projects are coming out next year and the journey toward a future on a next level will be unfolding even more rapidly. People are tuning into the cosmic vibration that is allowing us to wake up to what is really important in this life and to experience the interconnected of all beings in this planet and beyond. What if string theory is a scientific language for an experience mystics have been recounting throughout history... hopefully one day the two can be brought to equilibrium so science can stop being built on a de facto exploitation of our earth (and beyond) both in spirit and action, and religions won't be used as a means of world domination and social control. It's time for the old story to go.
Leopard Lux :: light bringer warrior

For me this year was the ultimate shedding-of-old-skin cycle... learning to let go (on all levels) and to allow myself to transcend old wounds and outdated patterns in order to experience myself in the moment without fear of the future (which is rooted in being attached to past experiences). It actually sounds easier being said than done, and it required a lot of self-reflection and conscious efforts. What ultimately keeps us in fear underneath is our subconscious fear of losing thee connection=love, which is a form of death-anxiety. All fear goes back to the root of death-anxiety, a deep fear of being "cut-off" from the source.
Pollution :: Separatio
Leopard Lux manifested as Nature Spirit being dismembered by machines during which she has a vision of war :: sulphur :: separation :: leo :: >> see integration & blossom in part 2. Blossom :: Coagulatio

So when you give up the fear, you can experience your pure freedom and allow yourself to be connected with your own source of love energy (=source energy). My recurring dreams with big cats made me face those deep fears, which is why felines have taken over much of my creative imagination this year. Of course, it is the journey that has no real end, because the journey is the goal itself.
Not everything went my way, but I learned from those-there are certain things you have control over and there are others that are out of your hands and the best you can do with those is to take the lesson and move on. Regrets are a leak on one's chi and so are bad feelings...and there is no time to waste with wasting. I definitely feel that I've made a big step toward experiencing life in the absolute moment this year, perhaps because of all the tests I was getting. It was the Stage of the Fool stepping into the unknown after giving up the past...which, if you see it for what it is, is allowing yourself to plunge into the realm of infinite possibilities. Most of the real progress I made was internal, and I am completely ready to leave the Year of the Ox to reap the fruits of all the invested hard work and to manifest all that is already alive and growing in my mental womb. Beginning next spring, the Year of the Tiger is going to be fun...lots of feline fantasy birthing, traveling, love & work on the next level...and abundance!
new piece ::: Turquoise Freedom : The First Messenger
(first of the new series, more to come...)

I'm still digesting AVATAR. I feel like I've been painting characters from the same reality in the past two years and even some of my visions and visualizations have overlapped with the magic world of Pandora. My tribal cats are definitely related to the Na'vi in spirit. I mean, what if artists are tapping into a reality that is out there, and that reality is just as real as ours. The limitations we place on our mind prevent us from experiencing a more complex reality; the key is to recognize them as limitations. I always welcome my characters as messengers. I don't "make them up", I rather feel like I'm manifesting or outlining them.

[The Healer Ibrahim Yaqut x Lichiban collabo Brooklyn, 2008]
I just found an old drawing of an vision I had back when I was 17, and I realized that it was the same character in a different shape that I worked on exactly a year ago, and which became one of my main characters, LOTUSHEART. It is for me the manifestation of heart energy, love as it bursts out of the earth into the universe like a supersonic lightrocket (in the form of a feline samurai). This vibration is coming from the soil, mother earth, and it is our responsibility to protect it for us to be able to receive the love that is emanating from it. It requires a shift in a way we relate and feel toward the natural world to experience our underlying oneness. But the reward is what is called the experience of bliss. I had a life-transforming experience this summer when I had a chance to go back to my childhood and experience the woods through my 5 year-old self's eyes and heart...with complete connectedness and a sense of innocence. I actually saw the plants as they were in the movie, glowing having lit up from within. So after seeing AVATAR, I was immediately teleported back into that memory. It takes you to the purest form of happiness that makes you want to laugh out loud and shed tears at the same time...something kids know how to do best.

World religions institutionalized spirituality and they forgot about our host, which allowed people to justify a complete exploitation of the planet's natural resources. Tribal communities are connected to their environment in a more organic way that maintains a sacred bond between humans & nature, so I oriented myself toward those spiritual traditions that cultivate this sacred interconnectedness. My murals were all inspired by this desire to connect with the magic of nature through my imagination while I've been grinding in the city, and perhaps to positively influence my future through visualization techniques that projected me into the natural environment that I'd like to eventually take inspiration from and call it my new home when time is ripe. Part of me is all ready to be around orchids, birds, waterfalls and fish markets and the painted temple in the woods I've been already visualizing. But another part of me still sees a role for me in the city, so I promised myself that I'd enjoy it as much as I can while I am being hosted in this amazing metropolis. By living in the now and doing my best to be connected with positive energy and positive people. My life right now is completely magical, I feel like my pieces are telling me a story I understand only months or sometimes years after I've finished them.

I'm ready to open up infinitely more doors of possibilities... and am very thankful for all the people in my life right now and closing a year with a big smile on my face. You are a constant source of inspiration (one of the greatest things about being an artists is that your friends are also your favorite artists). Thanks to everyone who keeps on keeping me in his or her heart--- I love you.
HAPPY 2010 to everyone!

i want to be a....FUTURE WOMAN :: Rockets

Cosmic disco/space rock legends the ROCKETS were way ahead of their time when they came out with Future Woman in 1975. Hailing from out of space, the history of Le ROCKETS starts in Paris (France) in the year 1972: originally landed on earth as the CRYSTAL, but in 1974, they changed their name to ROCKET MEN (or ROCKETTERS) and metamorphosed into their new incarnation as five grey eyed, silver skinned bold aliens recording the single 'Rocket Man' produced by Claude Lemoine, who would become their producer 'til 1983. The instrumentation is super sexy and the talkbox linked with the guitar is ingenious!

NOT SO SECRET ::: i did it...

LinkBrooklyn, NY 11216
...i let go of this piece. it was one of my first portraits of its kind, using watercolor on canvas as a way of experimenting with other surfaces and media, and painting instead of drawing. i think wood surfaces wouldn't be able to create these washes, which i like a lot, but i still find wood a more inspiring base than linen canvas.

so this one was of those nothing fancy early sketch pieces that i was emotionally attached to for some sentimental reasons. it was a good reminder that i can always switch to canvas. i was practicing portraits by using one of the famous photos of Jamel Shabazz, a big inspiration of mine... as i've been learning to let go of stuff, i try to go for things that i might be attached the most. the person who showed me the model was my friend, amazing artist Kesed, who pretty much gave away most of his possessions to his friends, and i was one of the lucky beneficiaries. so to push forward with my promise to myself, i gave this one to my neighbor and talented fellow paint-pal, the homie Concep for his birthday (he's been also harassing me for a while to give it to him:). felt great to let go of it, actually. i'm a big fan of his of work so it's in great company. check out his cool blog for eye candies & inspirations.

the beautiful Miss Ashley Mui and Concep brought the Stoop (a youth mentoring project that connects Brooklyn youth with working artists) over for a studio visit. great convos, i've been waiting to get to know them. check out the interview about the Stoop with my friend, the amazing Sallome Hralima, one of the visionaries behind the project.

this mix has been giving me full body eargasms..
this is one of the sexiest futuristic sound out there "from the underground DIY electronic music of North America and Europe in the late 1970s and 80s. these tracks were all created with analog synths and drum machines from the 70s until now, and most were originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves. [mixed by Veronica Vasicka]" ---definitely one of the best things that happened to music. ....please bring out more of this sound!!

Green Eyed Love Remixes
Mayer Hawthorne

Green Eyed Love is clearly a reference to the "Green Fairy" a.k.a the legendary French spirit, Absinthe, distilled from a hallucinogenic herb, Artemisia absinthium, commonly referred to as "grande wormwood". Blamed for its alleged addictive psychedelic properties, absinthe was banned in Europe & in the US after 1915, though its destructive qualities were probably to be blamed on its high alcoholic content (45%–74% ABV) instead of its slight psychoactive qualities. It was definitely a major player responsible for much of the alcoholism that was rampant among artists at the turn of the century.
music just keeps on getting better.

ANIMATION OF THE DAY :: Gandahar (Rene Laloux)

Here is another beautiful work by one of my favorite animation artists, RENE LALOUX, called Gandahar, known in the English version as Light Years. According to the plot, the utopian world of Gandahar is threatened by destruction as foretold by a mysterious prophecy. Queen Ambisextra and the Council of Women send the warrior Sylvain to discover the meaning of the riddle and to save their paradisiacal homeland. He discovers an army of preprogrammed metallic humanoids who form a militant slave society that threatens to destroy Gandahar. The metal soldiers kidnap Gandaharians by emitting paralyzing rays that send the bodies of those they capture through a portal. Later these captives return as a slave member of their society, also encased in metal. You can watch the whole movie in parts on youtube to find out what happens.

The original version was directed by René Laloux, and was based on Jean-Pierre Andrevon's novel Les Hommes-machines contre Gandahar (The Machine-Men versus Gandahar). An English version was produced by Harvey Weinstein, and noted science-fiction author Isaac Asimov made the revision of the translation.

DON'T SLEEP ::: Prince & Raye 6

A couple of weeks ago, I pulled this image off the web to comment on this incredible record cover. Dirty Mind is the third album by Prince, released October 8, 1980. According to the New Rolling Stone Album Guide, "Dirty Mind remains one of the most radical 180-degree turns in pop history. " PRINCE is completely androgynos here and is completely fearless about it. He doesn't care about fitting into any stereotypes and yet in his androgynos way, he is sexy as fuck. His sheer creative power and sex appeal makes him one of the most charismatic living artists today. I have all the respect for artists who get to this place of freedom, and I mean in all aspects of their self-expression. The power of his music is coming from this complete fearlessness.

Anyway, I only realized later why I had this image lingering around. The realization came after I listened to RAYE 6's new track, UNIVERSAL LOVER. This song is bad!!! and is coming from the same kind of fearlessness (go download it, here). The more I listen to it, the more I realize how genius it is...the world is about to be at Raye 6's feet, I'm really excited for her. And I'm also thinking, that the picture I drew of her and Prince is an image of the future that I would like to see manifest. Imagine that!

ANIMATION OF THE DAY: Oblio ::: The Crux of the Matter

This menu is probably the raciest I've ever seen, but unlike I would've imagined,
where I picked it up was actually this completely tame Japanese restaurant on 25 St Marks Ave (bw 2nd & 3rd) my girl Enki took me to the other night. This is a serious 'recession-special' spot in the heart of the East Village on the touristy St Marks Ave, called Kenka. The food quality is good Japanese comfort food -definitely not hi-end and I was more comfortable eating their grillled dishes than their sushi, but you can't go wrong with the $1.50 sapporo or $6-8 bottles of sake. And you can test your dinner mate's imagination on the menu.

BILAL & ROBERT GLASPER :: 'All Matter' receives Grammy nomination

We are all excited about BILAL's Grammy nomination for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for his appearance on Robert Glasper's fantastic new album Double Booked out on Blue Note!! Bilal recently got signed to Plug Research, which also houses artists, such as Shafiq Husayn and Exile. His own album is completely brilliant showing the versatility of Bilal's taste and talent - it is a future classic . These are intense times and artists manage to pull from somewhere deeper because of this opening of creative source energy that is available more because of the economic and political transformations are creating tension---artists are more sensitive to this kind of vibration perhaps, but we soak it up and transform it in our art. This is how I experience it and the more artist friends I talk to, the more confirmation I get. I'm excited about 2010 because I know how many truly amazing projects will be finally released next year. This year was a year of hardship and let go of the limitations and unnecessary attachments to the past for many, but next year will be time for the rebirth & creative freedom, The Year of the Phoenix. And a lot more amazing good energy released through music and art. Time to elevate. Taking off also means to take off the load that is holding you back from rising to a more free and elevated state of consciousness that allows you to evolve and manifest yourself on a higher level. Expand, realize and love.

For those who haven't gotten yet into LA's Ambassador of Boogie-Funk, here is a chance to get a taste of DAM FUNK's galactic soundscapes for FREE! This volume features some of my favorites from the album (yes to 'Sky Is Ours!'). Thanks to Fusicology for the exclusive feature.
For a limited time only

From Dam-Funk:
'Sky' is the final chapter of my 5-part presentation of Toeachizown. I chose to round out the set on a totally positive vibe & level of sound with these songs. Joints like “The Sky Is Ours” (MP3) I feel captures positive & uplifting vibes while still remaining based in the 'Funk' yet, with new types of chords & arrangements being experimented with + vocals throughout this particular song. I consider “The Sky Is Ours” to be one of my signature compositions in regards to sound, style, arrangement, drums, vocals, & keyboard playing. I'm very proud of this one. I'm glad that it was able to be released 'officially' on this project. I also hope U dig the rest of the joints contained on 'Sky'. With “Nu-Frontiers” I got to pull out my silver-sparkled Slingerland drum set and funk out for a bit, real tough for U. It, as with 99% of all my material, was 'recorded live' from beginning to end. “Spacecapades” is for the ultra critical headz whom hold the opinion that a lot of my stuff 'sounds the same'. Pleeaaaze! Just give “Spacecapades” a whirl, will ya'? 'New-Wave-Funk' vibes on that one, as well as on the joint “Fantasy”. Both made from the heart & without any irony attached, whatsoever. "Come On Outside" is a vocal joint that I hope U dig, which invites U to do just what it says: “Come On Outside & Won't U Funk Wit' Me”. It's long overdue y'all. And, I chose to close 'Sky' out with “Keep Lookin' 2 The Sky”, which I hope we ALL remember to do whenever we get low on this rock.
Always fam...remember to: “Keep Lookin' 2 The Sky”!
Peace & thank U for glidin' wit' me thru Toeachizown.
Sincerely yours;
- DâM-FunK / 2009

Sky is the last volume of Dam's Toeachizown Vol. 5. All five volumes of Toeachizown are now available in digital form, and a double CD. The 5LP box set's release date is to be announced.

The incredible world of SHUSEI NAGAOKA

This man's artistic vision shaped so much of the visual imagination of the 70s and 80s. Born in 1936 in a mountain village in the vicinity of Nagasaki, SHUSEI NAGAOKA's family had to evacuate their home when the atomic bomb hit the city in 1945. He entered Tokyo Musashino Art University at the age of 19, but decided to quit three years later, as he was already operating a successful business as an illustrator. Nagaoka illustrated several iconic record covers ranging from Earth Wind & Fire to Deep Purple, Munich Machine, Calderon and several others as well as graced the covers of sci-fi books, movie & car ads. Huge inspiration! Check out his website

INSPIRATION :: Earth Wind & Fire ::: dreams are real

Earth Wind & Fire has been such an inspiration for me on many levels. Their visual representation from their magic theater-style performances to their record cover illustrations by Shusei Nagaoka (peep my post on his work above) and videos reflected a bigger spiritual vision that they were manifesting through their music. What Maurice White says about creativity and spirituality is the way I see the two intertwined in my life as well, and I'm definitely feeling Larry Dunn (part 3) in preferring doing creative work to yachting. Their music and message are timeless.
