ARTIST OF THE MONTH :: Samurais Don't Blink: RAMMELLZEE R.I.P. (1960-2010)

RAMMELLZEE (1960-2010)
I've seen it online and also got a sad message to confirm it from his close friend Doze about the passing of Rammellzee, one of the most important artists today. I was told only a couple of days ago, that a lot of my imagery (including the snowleopard totem, the samurai gear fetish and my mask) reminded them of Rammellzee's stuff, which is why I was so drawn to his work when I first encountered it...his untimely death is just a huge loss to the art world, which I think still owes the proper recognition for his enormous legacy. Always one step ahead of his time, he was one of the foundational figures behind a lot of art forms that we take for granted today. A huge inspiration in many ways, he was one of my favorite living artists. Rest in Power
you can see his work at gothicfuturism.com

“Always ahead of his time, New York artist and performer Rammellzee (pronounced “Ram: Ell: Zee) was born 1960 in Far Rockaway, Queens. Credited with being one of the inventors of graffiti art in the late 1970’s as well as one of the original hip hop artists from the New York area who introduced specific vocal styles which date back to the early 1980s. His influence can still be heard in contemporary artists such as The Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill and his legendary hip-hop single “Beat Bop” with K-Rob was produced by the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, and has become one of the most sought after hip hop releases ever.

In the mid-80’s, Rammellzee became associated with a group of artists who painted or tagged in a style known as East Village wild style. This was an illegible, dynamic style of writing letters derived originally from the Gothic script of Medieval manuscripts. In 1982, he appeared in the seminal hip hop documentary Wildstyle by Charlie Ahearn, his fame in graffiti circles was established when he painted New York subway trains with Dondi, OU3, and Ink 76, and Doctor Revolt. Rammellzee’s graffiti and art work are based on his theory of Gothic Futurism, which describes the battle between letters and their symbolic warfare against any standardizations enforced by the rules of the alphabet; his treatise, “Iconic Panzerisms”, details an anarchic plan by which to revise the role and deployment of language in society.

Rammellzee’s work has been exhibited internationally. His work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He performs in self-designed masks and costumes of different characters of his own creation, one featured within his board art named “Reaper Grimm”.”

My good friend, activist & art hustla Rasu Jilani of Coup d'Etat Brooklyn was also there to support...I owe him big time for putting me on this year. Thank you!

Also, big shout out to the lovely ladies Jacqwi Campbell who shot the promo video & to Shaunna Randolph who interviewed me and took most of these shots of me below...[ehmm..that was all spontaneous fun...] Also shout to Toshun Campbell who was on board shooting as well. HERE ARE some of my favorites of the line-up

MY GIRLFRIENDS RULE : Shea Rose

Back in January, I wrote a "Next Big Thing" post about my beautiful friend, SHEA ROSE, who was getting ready to drop her debut Rock & Rose EP. Since then her rapidly ascending journey has taken her to be featured in numerous magazines, such as Essence, People, InTouch, Performer and OK Magazine, and she also graced the home page of PUMA as well. Most recently, she has been hand-picked by Queen Latifa to be " one of the hottest, up and coming female artists in 2010" for COVER GIRL's Queen Collection feature. Here is more about her recent COVER GIRL feature from her press release: Recording artist and songwriter Shea Rose is a Boston native and fifth semester professional music major at the Berklee College of Music. She has been described as the female Lenny Kravitz meets Lauryn Hill. "We need to make sure their (female artists) voices are heard," says Queen Latifah. More than 600 music videos were viewed by Queen Latifah herself. Rose along with four women were flown to Miami for a photo shoot with celebrity photographer Peggy Sirota and recorded a remake of Queen Latifah's hit anthem U.N.I.T.Y with famed music producers Cool and Dre.

Soon after the shoot in Miami, CoverGirl signed Rose to be a fresh new face (spokesperson/
ambassador) of the CoverGirl Queen collection and invited her to the 2010 B.E.T Awards where Queen Latifah will be hosting. The show airs on B.E.T on June 27th, 8p/7c. “This has been a beautiful, amazing and humbling experience," says Rose. "I am so grateful that Queen Latifah understands how important it is to encourage and support young, female entrepreneurs. I would've loved to see her perform at this year's AFROPUNK fest, whose incredible line-up still fell short of female voices. In any case, you will her about this queen as she's making her way to the top. A combination of 100% genuine beauty & talent, she's a definite force to be reckoned with. For all my blogger fam out there, I'd recommend that you keep her on your radar! Stay in touch with her on facebook page or stalk her on twitter.

SHEA ROSE
WHERE DO YOU CALL IT HOME? The sassy girl in me wants to say Earth. Haaaaa! When I was a little girl, I wanted to be from Saturn because the ring around it looked so freakin’ cool. Just recently this dude came up to me and told me I was from a different planet, but that’s another story. Anywho, on Earth, I reside in Boston.

WHAT DO YOU DO? Manifest Light Through Music…Shine! Shine! Shine!

TRUE BEAUTY IS When no matter how long you’ve been on this earth, your eyes dance and your smile ignites a room. I remember, vividly, the last conversation I had with my grandfather. His face glowed like a newborn baby. He was eighty-nine and he had just underwent surgery – second leg amputation due to diabetes. I went to visit him and we were laughing it up boy…talking about how the Red Sox couldn’t get it together to win The World Series and how he had a crush on the nurse who washed him everyday and that she turned him on. Wow granddad! Never thought he would have passed away the next day. In his last moments, his eyes were filled with so much joy and life always smiling – TRUE BEAUTY!

BEATS…Thom Ta Ka Ta Ka Thom Thom // Ta Ki Ta Ta Ki Ta Ta Ki Ta // Ta Ka Di Mi Ta Ka Di Mi Ta Di Gi Na Thom Thom.

TRUE SEXY IS Sushi. Port. Chocolate. Need I say more? Yeass…. Intellect. Confidence. Integrity.

MUSIC IS MYGift back to the Universe…

ART DOES NOT..Does not art capture the human condition, our spirit and array of emotions?

MY NIGHTS ARERockin’!

THESE 3 TURN ME ON…Strong Physique. Discipline. Oh and a man who smells good, tastes like honey and plays the cello. Uh oh, let me shut up before I get carried away. What am I talkin’ bout, let me get carried away please! It starts off in this loft right with satin walls and light ebony wood floors. It’s him, me, the cello and that bottle of port….Haaaaaa!

SELF-KNOWLEDGE…Is an absolutely thrilling journey! For me, connecting with and understanding my past has helped me put so much into perspective…who and where I come from, where I’ve been, who I am today and where I’m going. Also, I’m very clear about my “personal legend” (for those of you who have read “The Alchemist”) and what legacy I want to leave behind. It’s a beautiful evolution, spending time on this earth, aging, wisdom, spiritual growth…I love it!

ENOUGH OFCelebrity gossip and sensationalized news…so icky poo poo!

MY CREATIVITY IS…Evolving.

TRUE POWER ISHumm I don’t know let me Google this one…okay here are the top three search results: True Power (a) is a source of mystical power found in the Wheel of Time books of Robert Jordan (b) is symbolized by the letter P and is measured in the unit of Watts (W) and (c) is manifested in tangible form such as electromagnetic radiation, acoustic waves, or mechanical phenomena.

LIFE CAN BE THETheme song to Jaws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvCI-gNK_y4) or “Fun” by Sly & The Family Stone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=You1z6H6Nvg)

TO LOVE IS TO…LOVE! I was made from love…A Love Child! Thank you Hillary Jr. and Beverly Rose!!! Khalil Gibran said it best in the “The Prophet”

On Love

When love beckons to you, follow him, Though his ways are hard and steep…Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not nor would it be possessed; For love is sufficient unto love….

I'VE GOT FLOW BECAUSEI can flow wit it and fit in just about anywhere with anyone. My upbringing and the places I’ve traveled produced this chameleon “Flo-Shea” and I get to explore and express all of my sides, experiences and personalities through my music. Rock! Hip-Hop! Sing-Songwriter wit Soul! There’s Shea “The White Girl” who grew up in the suburbs, Shea “The Black Girl” with the power afro, Shea “The Rocker” who likes tall skinny white dudes with long hair and guitars, Shea “The Hippy”, who would like to be Janis Joplin for a day, Shea “The Tom Boy,” who likes to hang with dudes and talks about the hottest chics in Hollywood and then Shea “The Artist” – female Lenny Kravitz meets Lauryn Hill. And those are just a few of my living personalities. For more on this and the many voices in Shea’s head tune in…www.shearose.com LOL!

i heART NYC : WHITE TRAIN launch event

Some of my new and old work will be represented by a brand new company, called White Train. I've been looking for a deal like this and I'm very happy to say that I found a great team of people who are ready to make some moves in the art world. Today, the site is launching with a party to celebrate the event.

White Train is excited to announce the anticipated launch of whitetrain.com, a lifestyle website that offers NY based urban artists the opportunity to showcase and sell their art and unique, innovative products.

In the 1980s, NYC’s white subway trains acted as an open canvas for urban artists in their fight for both recognition and maximum exposure throughout the city and its 5 boroughs. These artists wanted to communicate with the public that art should not have any boundaries, and should be open and accessible to all walks of life. Just like the trains of the 80s, whitetrain.com acts as a canvas to showcase and market the work of up-and-coming New York based urban artists. “I'm very excited to for the launch. I feel its going to be a great resource for ambitious artists who are dedicated to their craft, but have little time to market themselves,” says Maxine Medina, founder of White Train. “We are a platform to help bridge the gap for artists who are extremely talented, and provide them with the resources they need to get to the next level. Not only will we help sell their work, but we also provide them with various types of advisory services allowing the artists to concentrate on their art while we help them with the rest.”

The White Train team will celebrate the launch of whitetrain.com by hosting the first exhibition featuring artists to know, love, and support in 2010. The event will take place on Thursday, June 17 2010 at Chacala: The Secret Spot, located on 394 Broadway (4th floor, between Walker & White) from 6p – 10p.

Whitetrain.com is a lifestyle e-commerce website and online gallery. The goal is to support and enhance NYC’s up-and-coming artists’ range by attracting professional opportunities and engaging a community of passionate artists with similar mindsets.

ANIMATION OF THE DAY :: Rene Laloux :: Az Ido Urai [ LES MAÎTRES DU TEMPS]

:: LES MAÎTRES DU TEMPS : THE MASTERS OF TIME ::
Growing up this was my favorite animation...was one of my biggest inspirations to keep on drawing. Two of my favorite French artists, Renê Laloux and Moebius teamed up with a Hungarian animation studio to create THE MASTERS OF TIME, a time-traveling mind-bending saga about a little boy stranded on a fantastic planet of giant braineating insects. Until recently, only the Hungarian and French versions were available, but I recently found the whole movie on youtube with English subtitles.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW :: 'Time Traveling' WALTER MECCA x Lichiban interview

Hailing from outerspace via Paris, WALTER MECCA is one of my favorite artists from France (the other one happens to be Walter's good friends, K?m.f &ONRA whom I recently interviewed here as well). I've known Walter and K?m.f. since back in the myspace days, we somehow found and liked each other's work and kept up. The first thing I heard from him was the Biozone sampler I found a couple of years ago -an another dope Weirdata project that featured Jessica Pepper, Metal Ninja, Sidy/Stairway to Nutopia, Brice Torres , K?MF along with Walter. I had a plan to post this interview with him way before his new album dropped this April, but life got super busy, so I had to wait until now to put it out.

The new album is highly visual & cinematic- I wasn't surprised to find out that it was inspired by retro ninja & horror movie soundtracks (and maybe some aerobic workout tapes). Walter has been pseudonymed as the "VHS King", since the exclusive packaging for TONNERRE includes retro videos on a vhs tape and music on a Tonnerre USB key. I heard that the exclusive VHS package already sold out, but the digi version is available on weirdata

Supaa baad' - this is my favorite track of the album...probably the sexiest tune I've heard in a long time...
Walter-Mecca-Supaa baad by zenith01
Lichiban: Where are you from? Could you tell me a little bit about your background & musical influences? When did you decided to do music for a living?
Walter Mecca: Hi Lichi, my name is Walter "Dal-gren" Mecca, a MC/music producer/videomaker from Paris, France. I started in 2005 with a first project called the "Love Message", and then released the "Cut Basic LP" in 2008 on Favorite recordings. Now, the new "Tonnerre" release on Weirdata/BioZone Records, which comes with an exclusive Vhs/Usb Format Pack. Yeah, I have so many influences, life & old music from outerspace, hip-hop, electronic, psy-rock...old movies, open-minded people, good food... My parents gave me a big musical influence, jazz-rock/fusion & music from early 80'... I started with hip-hop music in 90' and now I don't have any limit..(laugh)
Listen to the Tonnere Teaser

L: I'm really feeling your new album...tell me a little bit about it? What was involved in the making?
WM: Spaced out samples, vintage synths and funky talkbox are the main ingredients to this outstanding project. The exclusive package includes videos on a vhs tape and music on a Tonnerre usb key. Tonnerre is my new album and it incorporates a wide part of what I'm able to do...Retro-Futurist music, I took one year working in my studio for the album and I've lost one teeth with my talkbox...
L: What would you like people to take away after listening to the album?
WM: I want people go to unexplored sides of the brain.

L: I just had an interview with your music collabo partner, ONRA. It looks like you guys have been spearheading the revival of the space-boogie-funk-electro sound in France. How is the music scene in Paris? Are people open to your sound?
WM: I think Paris is open...the music scene is good,we have some good listeners here. A lot of bullshit too, but it's like everywhere...(laugh)

L: The secret ingredient...
WM: Nothing special, Walter is just a Dream.

L: What's your arsenal? Favorite instrument?
WM: Love my Atari 520 st with vintage synthesizers, just put talkbox on it...

L: What's your creative process?
WM: Turn on the sound & Time Travel.

L: Time & space traveling ?Do you practice it:)
WM: Sure! and you too!

L: Haha, yes that's right...If you had a superhero alterego, what kind of attributes & supernatural powers would he have?
WM: I think Green Lantern is the good one.

L: Inspirations...
WM: I listen a lot of prog/electronic music...some 80's pop stuff too...and horror & ninja movies all day everyday.

L: Next project?
WM: Next project is the Metal Ninja - Final Duel Lost Tapes On Weirdata, VHS/USB classic...Dal-gren - Cut Basic 2...

L: Any plans to tour in the US?
WM: For sure...need to come soon with the all Weirdata Family from France...

L: Dream collaboration?
WM: Zappa.

L: Could you put me on your three of your favorite albums of 2009?
WM: Me'shell Ndegeocello, Seledyn, Dam Funk.

L: Define success...
WM: For me the biggest success is when you found yourself and ready to show and receive some Love all over the world.

L: Shoutouts
Big up to you Lichiban & the blog, To all my weirdata Family, Metal ninja, Nsdos, Onra, AITF, Pain o chokolat and to all people from France to the Infinite.
L: Thanks!

ROOM 777: The Magic Room presents :: NOOR ONE, photographer :: NOOR ONE x LICHIBAN collabo

I connected with NOOR ONE this past winter. Somehow she found me on myspace and asked me if I'd be down to meet her and do a photoshoot while she was visiting New York City from Paris for the first time. I loved her work, so I was really happy to connect...I'm the same way, when I travel to other countries, I like to connect with locals, and meeting artists elsewhere is a huge part of the fun in travel. Here are some of the highlights of our late night walk around my old neighborhood in Brooklyn. She is most known for her work documenting street artists bombing the city of Paris at night (she is probably the youngest and perhaps the only female in the game there), but her black and white portraits are beautiful as well. The way she uses perspectives and angles in her compositions is just crazy. this one on the left was captured with the new FUJI Instax, a new alternative to polaroid.

check out her blog and myspace

PRESS :: STREET TALK UK x Lichiban interview

Last summer, I had a chance to connect with three of the nicest cats from London: host/ creative director Kevin Lanre and two of his team mates Daryl Arthur and Mike Osaer, who selected me as one of the New York artists to be featured on their on-line show, STREET TALK UK. The project serves as a bridge connecting New York with the London creative scene. The site launched on January 1st this year, and had featured artist interviews such as Va$htie & Ellis G already, and will be dropping interviews with other key New York-based personalities such as gallery-owner Jonathan Levine and one of my favorite new artists, Nneka. I'm pretty psyched to be on the roster. Here is the link to my full feature.
Tune in on their site for more interviews and giveaways.

Also, Kevin has a parallel, equally dope project called The Whorington which features a lot of fresh art and music as well (They had my cat shaman, Boddhi featured on it recently). Peep the site here & join their facebook group here.

ARTISTS TO WATCH :: Jasmine Solano x TONE interview

New York photographer/documentarian TONE recently interviewed the lovely MC/DJ Jasmine Solano, one of the female artists of New York out there making waves. I've been a fan of these fellow artists' work for a minute, beside that they are also real good peoples... I love Jasmine's energy and her integrity. Great combo, inspiring work!

From TONE:"Jasmine Solano is a lady with many hats. Aside from her career as an MCEE, she also rocks parties all over NYC, Philly and the rest of the US. Jasmine recently started touring with Wiz Kalifa as his tour DJ. I had the pleasure of hanging out with her not long ago for one of our epic industry/artist conversations. This time I was recording. YERP!"
