YASIIN BEY - N****s in Poorest

"The artist formerly known as Mos Def drops the visual interpretation of his rendition of The Throne's ubiquitous song. Honoring Malcom X's 42nd death-day, Yasiin's version conveys quite a different message. It also serves as the first video from his Top 40 Underground series. The thought=provoking visual was helmed by Yasiin himself and Set Free whereas editing credits come courtesy of Andre Cole." [source]

FREE DOWNLOAD: MERIDIEN "Magic" [Official Video]

I'm totally on this vibration. I mean on all levels, gotta live life with passion or else it's only half experienced. I hope to see more artists channeling this vibe. In their own words, Brooklyn-based duo, Yohimbe Sampson and Bradley Valentin "found a way to ARTiculate the optimism that exists in triumph and trial."... everyone who is in tune with this vibration can relate to that.

NEW COLLABO: FOREIGN UNITY x KATAPULKO "Urduja Winter Collection 2011-2012"

I recently had a chance to meet Jenn Villaruz, founder & designer of FOREIGN UNITY, who had asked me to collaborate with her on her new collection as an art director and model. I loved her previous collections & her energy, she is beautiful inside and out, so I was happy to contribute. This was also my first opportunity to feature my new mural, MAITRI, the Future Buddha’s Cosmic Lap. We made our own headgears, inspired by the idea of the warrior queen archetype that’s been a thread in my work as well. Mine unfortunately was falling apart, so I had to hold it to my head the whole time lol. We had Jenn's friend, the awesome Dr. Sus on board with the camera. You can read more about the theme and inspiration behind the shoot and the collection below.

FOREIGN UNITY ’URDUJA’ Winter Collection 2011/2012 Press Release:
Co-signed by Les Nubians, Amel Larrieux, Kelis, Ladybugg MECCA and many more, Brooklyn-based jewelry brand, ‘Foreign Unity’ by Jennifer Villaruz has yet to become evident. With affordable and inventive hand-crafted designs, there is no telling that Jennifer puts a lot of love and hard work into each piece. Stemming from originality, her designs have a spiritual welcoming of all cultures combined. This collection features a collaboration with one of Jennifer’s biggest inspirations and feline fantasy creator, Lichiban. Lichiban took charge in creating the art direction and graphic design for the collection. Also, her amazing new mural, MAITRI, was our backdrop for the entire photo shoot, that took place in Brooklyn. With the right mixture of art and design, this collaboration creates an amazing display of eye-catching jewelry and playful artistry.

The inspiration behind the entire collection stemmed from Philippine heroine, Urduja (pronounced “er-doo-wha”), who was born in the 1400s. To many Filipinos, she was considered to be a legendary warrior queen and was recognised for her beauty, ambition and leadership. She had a unifying power; reigning peace in the central regions of Luzon. Urduja was known to many to fight in military combat like a king and brought imported goods to her people using elephants as her form of transportation. Her story and my collection naturally aligned itself as the birth of the designs came to life. With desert storm camoflauge combined with feminine vintage accents, the entire modern day warrior queen-look evolved. Lichiban and Jennifer created their own head-pieces for the shoot to top off the entire ‘Urduja’ look.

Foreign Unity: Winter Collection 2011/2012 is out NOW! Check out the full lookbook here.

Jesse Boykins III - Zoner [Demo] [Official Video + Free Download]

Amazing new video from BK fam, Jesse Boykins III directed by his long time collaborator, Dr Woo. I first caught a screenshot of this video on twitter and was like whaaat? Everybody is really beautiful here, they did a fantastic job with this one. Jesse has always been an inspiration, I knew him since 2008 and remember going to his first shows just to get my music fix...awesome to see his steady rise, so well deserved.  He is one of the realest artists out there and I'm definitely in support of the Romantic Movement his spearheading.

My girl from London, the lovely Chesca and her partner-in-crime Yorke's latest project ROYALTY has been on my list to post for a while... finally I've been able to catch up with my to-do list. ROYALTY  has been getting big props from the press, from Dazed Digital to NME, which listed them as one of new bands to watch for in 2012. XLR8R described their sound as "somewhere in between Daft Punk's robotic revelry, Kraftwerk's chilly minimalism, and Jimmy Edgar's austere sex appeal, you'll find Royalty's Chesca and Elliot Yorke working out deep low-end melodies, incessant dance rhythms, alien vocoder sounds, and icy synthlines—all of which perfectly create the duo's retro-futuristic motif." I love it, I've always been a fan of her and her music. Their two releases are out on London-based label Five Easy Pieces. The latest, Purple Nights EP was actually put out on a super exclusive, 100 limited edition record release on purple vinyl!

My good friend, Brussels-based producer Cris Prolific recently hit me up with this remix he's done for Boom Clap Bachelors'Løb Stop Stå' that came out on LA label plug reseaerch.  Cris teamed up with Vancouver’s Moka Only to create this killer it!

Boom Clap Bachelors‘ “Mellem Dine Læber” The Danish representatives featuring members Robin Hannibal of Quadron, Ronnie Vindahl, Thomas Bisballe and David Cytryn; with additional vocal contributions from Coco O of Quadron and Liv Lykke have molded their own sound based of their various influences of D'Angelo, SA-RA, J Dilla, Erykah Badu, and '70s and '80s Danish music. Today, enjoy the official butter remix by Da TrueBluefunk Brotha Cris Prolific featuring the funkyest Vancouver lyricist and amazing producer Moka Only!

My fellow KONOGOMIX art collective founder, NY artist Quan Luv's recent feature introducing his brand KAFE KING shot by Alist aka Alysia Mazzella. Quan is one of the OGs of the NY underground art & fashion scene, his vision & style has influenced so many, whether people realize it or not. A true visionary, one of the dopests out there!

Here is Alysia, the director/editor of the feature, in her own words:
I caught up with Stevens Q Calixte–more popularly known as Quan Luv–to gain perspective on his original art, creativity, revolution and projects. Frequent downtowner's may know of Quan through A.L.I.E.N. (A Legion in Every Nation) a NYC unity movement, in addition, he has dreamed into existence a multitude of projects. Kafé King is a traveling art exhibit joining artist and enthusiasts under one roof. Visions.18 is his digital sketchbook, housing the genius he randomly creates. Konogo Mix is an art collective with his close friends and fellow artists; Mega Max, Lichiban, and Lou Diamond. Art never stops for Quan, it's simply an everyday reflection. BLING47 relaunch!

The wait is over, the much-anticipated bling47 site that has been going through some rewamping has finally launched yesterday. My friends, Waajeed (PPP) and Jackie O founded the site back in 2001, and eventually got Kenny Fresh (who later founded his own, by now popular music site, Freshselect) on board...I remember following the site few years back when Waajeed's band the Platinum Pied Pipers came out with their first album. Waajeed is from Detroit, and was a close friend of J Dilla and used to tour with Slum Village, so bling 47 was also a home for super exclusive Dilla joints. There is more where it came from...check out for instance this unreleased Ray J remix and the story behind it here.
