Island nations in the South Pacific stand at the front lines of the current environmental crisis. The island residents are vulnerable to more extreme weather patterns, such as typhoons, flooding, and drought. Once isolated societies are now trying to figure out how to adapt to the new problem of climate change while continuing to grapple with globalization, both of which are transforming the way of life and culture across the region. My project is about documenting this transitional period in the South Pacific and the effects these changes are having on its communities. In April I traveled to Kiribati for a month to photograph and collect information about how the rising sea levels are affecting daily life. During my time there I found many destroyed homes and learned that families had to build makeshift sea walls to protect their houses. As a result of the rising seawater food crops are much smaller and water wells are contaminated.

I love these guys, I almost forgot how much I love discovering new music...hasn't had much time for looking for new stuff. Of all the news that I hear from my old country (which is on the verge of a total economic collapse and even civil unrest), this just made my day. FOKN Bois must be the dopest export from Ghana these days and they got together with Irie Maffia, a Budapest-based band to record their album The FOKN DunaQuest in Budapest. Back in 2007, I had a chance to get up with Irie Maffia's Ghanaian-Hungarian lead singer/MC, Sena and was always curious to see where she's taking her art (check my interview with her). Fokn awesome! The remix album is up for free download!

It's been a busy year so far for Ghana’s most scandalous Afro-pop duo known as the FOKN Bois. Aside from almost causing a war between Nigeria and Ghana, touring Europe, USA and releasing the world’s first Pidgen Musical, they also managed to record an 8-track EP The FOKN Dunaquest in Budapest with ELO of Irie Maffia Production, Hungary’s leading musical force, who released it on the contemporary African label Akwaaba Music.

Peace. This is KRS-One! I'd like to personally thank everyone for their show of support toward the release of the "Just Like That" video. I'm not really a big Internet guy myself, but I had to respond to the enormous amount of love we've experienced since the release of the "Just Like That" video. MAD LION ROCKED IT! However, the best is still yet to come.
As you may know, I often use my talents to edutain my listeners and inspire the international Hip Hop community. 2012 will be no different. I feel sorry for those who already think that I preach too much in rhyme, or that I need to retire. On the contrary, I'm just getting started.
Turning the flame up a little more, my next video presentation "Aztecnical" will deal with the myths of 2012, particularly the December 21st 2012 Mayan Calendar "end date". Too many of our people are being led astray by movies, lectures and hype mostly regarding the celestial calculations of the Mayan Calendar. And while other cultures also predict the same "end date" calculations, it is important to point out that all cosmic alignments, shifts and even changes are occurring RIGHT NOW! The question is, how might this affect Hip Hop worldwide? I believe we are about to finally have our "say" in the world. The key word in the next few upcoming months will be "courage", and true courage comes from living rightly. As an international culture, Hip Hop is poised for a great opportunity; my goal is to get us prepared for it, and fear has no place in our collective future.
I am sending this "Aztecnical" video out in hopes that it sparks discussion and dispels fears. The first verse deals with the actual Mayan calculations themselves and shows how governments and corporate entities of all sorts use the fears of the public to their own economic and global advantages. The second verse deals with the conquest of Cortez over the Mayan People and how it was the Mayans' own cultural beliefs that were used against them to cease their lands and resources. The point being, do not allow hype and your own view of the world to lure you into the hands of those only out to exploit you. BE STRONG! BE COURAGOUS! And yes, Knowledge Reigns Supreme. There It Is,Just Like That.

The news of Jovan 'J1' Coleman's passing has came as a complete shock... J-1 aka The DEER (the drummer in Master Blazter with Dâm Funk & Computer Jay ) was 32, super talented, certainly the illest drummer I knew. Makes no sense.

He's been just given the key to the underground chamber where his ancestral spirits have activated his hyperspace spirit-vehicle and is about to morph into his next avatar, only visible to those who have access to that dimension...One of his superpowers is the ability to manifest his wishes in the material realm with ease, and has been blessed with the ability to unlock hearts with his visions. Taag is originally from Jamaica, but considers Brazil his second home. The project was filmed in Brazil featuring some of Tag's close friends, family & the beautiful people of Salvador, Bahia. This unprecedented, multi-media exhibition presents work by a group of intergenerational Southern artists of African descent that have examined contemporaneous realities of life in the South from a cultural, political, cosmological and sociological perspective. America’s southern states are often viewed monolithically, through a narrow and stereotypical lens of a romanticized antebellum past, post Civil War unrest, and 20th Century Civil Rights politics. Dirty Sensibilities explores current issues such as race relations in the Age of Obama, the survival of Southern folk traditions, post-Civil Rights realities, the significance of relationships with elders and the creation of a new Southern aesthetic. “Much of what is known about the Black experience in the South focuses on a historical period often directly related to the oppression of enslaved Africans, their struggle for liberation and their struggles for Civil Rights after the brief period of progress experienced during Reconstruction. However, the Southern narrative includes a history rich in culture, spirituality and Africanisms that have thrived over the past four hundred plus years,” states the exhibition’s curator Shantrelle P. Lewis. “This exhibition seeks to explore those idiosyncrasies that are unique to the region of the United States situated below the Mason Dixon Line.”

Though known primarily for her photography/mixed media work, she is also a painter and fashion designer which filters into and cross-references her various projects. Her lens reflects her "world view that centers on the past colliding with the present, as she aims to expose the emotional side of the city streets and pushes the final image to abstraction." Recently, she ventured into applying her skills to film on a project with another homie, MeLo-X & director Alexis Casson...the end result, as you can see below, is an amazing piece of art, truly innovative. She has been a fellow artista, friend and inspiration for me, and I'm excited to start a collaboration with her this Fall.

This year has been a great blessing, it is centered around balance, family and evolution. I began the year with my first solo show called "BIOMORPHIC" @ Art Whino Gallery. Igniting my past love for painting, creating a 20ft mural installation inspired by my digital photo collages, the mural with completed with my brother & sister. I was also honored to be part of G40 Art Summit in Washington DC & my debut show on the west coast @ Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles, CA along with many great & influential artists. Currently, I have my first show with 8x10 Collective called "BIO VS. NANO" which is the debut show of me, my brother Leo Angelo Bio & sister Grace Bio at DIS Micro Gallery / reBar Walkway in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

My greatest work of art to date was my collaboration with musician, MeLo-X; as the creative director of his latest video called "Mirrors In My Mind". The making of "Mirrors In My Mind" was a pure labor of love & pure vision of my heart through music. This is my debut into the video world & it feels amazing to evolve my photography into motion. The whole process of capturing the video consisted of 1,200+ photos, 33 individual collages assembled before the actual edit & amazing graphic work of my "third eye", amazing videographer & editor, Alexis Casson. During the process of creating the video, I was inspired to create a new series called the Collidoscope Series. The new series is based on life, balance & evolution.

I recently had a chance to work with SangeetSabha who organized this concert of two of India's greatest living master musicians, Ustad Shahid Parvez & Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. I greatly recommend it to anyone who loves Indian music...I used to listen to traditional Indian music more a few years ago, and recently rediscovered it through friends. DEDE, Deanne Reynolds & Tim Kvasnosky, is a Nouvelle pop band from Brooklyn. I heard about them last summer (Waajeed introduced me to the singer Dede and told me to watch out for their new album.) I just came across their new video 'Secrets' recently and remembered her from last year. I love the hi styling & the cinematic feel (plus she is beautiful), they definitely created a whole experience around the sound. Both the music & visuals have a French avantgarde feel, though you can definitely sense New York in there as well. Definite artists to look out for.

Queens, NY (August 15, 2011)— All female urban art collective, YOUNITY, presents GODDESShood: Our land is our jewel, an art exhibition that will feature 10 artists in conversation with the themes mother earth, the hood and sustainable farming. Opening on Saturday, September 10, from 2pm – 5pm at the Yonkers Riverfront Public Library, during the annual Yonkers Riverfest event, the project utilizes urban art as a platform for visual discourse on sustainable agriculture, food systems, food justice, and mother earth, and closes on Sunday, December 4th, 2011. Additional programming in the City of Yonkers and at Sarah Lawrence College will take place throughout fall 2011, including youth workshops and a panel discussion.

All of the artists in the exhibition, Lichiban, Swoon, Sofia Maldonado, Krista Franklin, Marthalicia, Diana McClure, Faith 47, lmnop, Lady Alezia, and Alice Mizrachi, engage with the theme mother earth or nature, and related concepts, both directly and indirectly in their individual artistic practices. In the context of this exhibition the artists were asked to utilize the idea of the hood as a metaphor for not only local neighborhoods and urban culture, but also land, nature and the natural environment at large. And, finally, the genesis and inspiration for the exhibition stems from the curators’ discovery of La Via Campesina (The International Peasant Movement) and an intense global movement for land and agricultural rights taking place below the radar.

In the YOUNITY tradition, GODDESShood: Our land is our jewel will include painting, murals, photography, and stencils, as well as video and sculptural objects. The exhibition picks up where YOUNITY’s last exhibition FRESHER!, which addressed consumerism, environmentalism, health, and renewable energy, left off in the fall of 2009. Co-curator Diana McClure says, “With the GODDESShood: Our land is our jewel exhibition we wanted to use the YOUNITY platform as a tool for social change and disseminator of information by bringing visibility to a battle being fought by peasants, small and medium-size farmers, landless people, women farmers, indigenous people, migrants and agricultural workers from around the world. A battle that seems to get lost in mainstream media’s disregard for the economic politics of green living.” With the success of YOUNITY’s premiere exhibit in 2007, The C R O S S O V E R, the second annual Heart and Soul show and book publication in 2008, and FRESHER! in 2009, YOUNITY has become one of the most sought after all-female collectives to date. Co-curator and YOUNITY co-founder Alice Mizrachi says, “After 3 years of annual exhibitions, wall productions, youth workshops, etc. The core YOUNITY production team decided to take a year off in 2010 to explore new ideas and individual creative pursuits. During that time we’ve all developed and hope to use our growing cultural capital to continue to support female urban artists and address social issues as individuals and a collective.”

LA singer/bassist Thundercat's debut album is due for release on Brainfeeder on August 30th. You may have seen him in two of the dopest videos out there (Flying Lotus's 'Mmmhmm' & Bilal's 'Levels'). After hearing the first time his 'Thunder - For Love I Come', it was a wrap for me. The album is produced by Flying Lotus. I can safely say that this has been my most anticipated album this year, and I haven't been disappointed.

In between playing gigs with the Suicidal Tendencies and jamming with jazz groups, Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner spent a lot of time working with Flying Lotus. The bassist/singer appeared on "MmmHmm" off the producer's Cosmogramma and they joined forces to form the Infinity band, which played BBC Radio 1 in December 2010. And on the low, they were also putting together Thundercat's debut on Brainfeeder. The progressive galactic-jazz project, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, is entirely produced by FlyLo and features guest vocalists such as Erykah Badu.

I just saw this excellent documentary about NYC gangs in the 60s and 70s at the NYC Latino Film Festival. Dope archival footage and live interviews made this amazing story come alive and show a side of NY that people who lived that era talk about with a mix of pride and painful memories. A beautiful work in oral history about a major social and cultural force that eventually gave birth to hip-hop and its global cultural impact. Street art and so much of music today wouldn't exist without the struggles and creative force of these guys back in the 60s & 70s. I highly recommend it.

From 1968 to 1975, gangs ruled New York City. Beyond the idealistic hopes of the civil rights movement lay a unfocused rage. Neither law enforcement nor social agency could end the escalating bloodshed. Peace came only through the most unlikely and courageous of events that would change the world for generations to come by giving birth to hip-hop culture. Rubble Kings, the most comprehensive documentation of life during this era of gang rule to date, tells the story of how a few extraordinary, forgotten people did the impossible, and how their actions impacted the world over.

Earlier this year, I did an interview with L.A. fam, Jay Won aka J-1, producer/drummer/DJ and one of the members of Master Blazter, where he mentioned that he was working on finishing his new Starship 27 compilation. As a follow-up to his first edition, J1 recently dropped a limited edition release (2X12" ltd. to 1,000 on blue vinyl and a BONUS 45 ltd. to 300 on green vinyl, also as digital) available on Insect Records featuring mostly West coast producers such as Dâm-Funk, I-Ced, Dibia$e, P.U.D.G.E., Devonwho, House Shoes, Eric Lau, Computer Jay, Ras-G, Blackspade, Coultrain, and more.

My personal favorites are Flame Brown's Blues & Pants (sounds like as if Waajeed were messing around with James Brown samples), J1's futuristic Slang Talk, F.A.M.E.'s psychedelic funk Superfuturisticfunktalapus, Dâm-Funk's classic I Don't Just Do Beats, Kone's drum-heavy Funk 3481, Computer Jay's unmistakable The Slapper, and the surprising drum & bass bonus track, NOFRENDO's Deep Space Heartache.

From the press release: In 2009, an album emerged out of nowhere like a UFO sighting called Starship 27.The album, curated by drummer, producer and DJ, J-1, featured an assortment of West Coast beat producers. This time around on Vol. 2, we see the list of tracks and producers expand including music by Dam Funk, DIBIA$E, P.U.D.G.E., Devonwho, and House Shoes to name only a few. With Starship 27 vol. 2, J1 becomes the curatorial captain guiding the spacecraft on its voyage.

MY HOMIES RULE TOO: Devin “PAN” Barrett of “The Casual”

I know PAN back from the days of writing for TRACE, where he used to be one of the OG writers (I'd be following an underground yet-to-be-discovered artist and then pow I would find an interview with them by him). PAN is a true tastemaker and culture hero. His eye for new talent is like shark's teeth; I believe he was the first to put on many artists and was able to shape new cultural movements through his features (I definitely have a lot of respect for that!). He's been working behind the scenes on developing his own brand The Casual (it's kind of a secret, so can't tell more yet) and has been co-curator and show writer/interviewer for the Live At The Loft music showcase series. He is also a part-time boxing coach and a full-time gentleman.

WHERE DO YOU CALL HOME? Wherever I lay my hat is my home, but Newark, NJ is where I reside.

WHAT DO YOU DO? I'm a culture seeker, so most of the time I'm exploring life and creativity. Depending on which day you ask me, I'm a journalist/writer, an antique propmaster's apprentice, an amateur boxing coach, vintage print archivist...soon to be photo gallerist and magazine publisher. BEATS…are what motivate us. Beats are indigenous and tribal. The most visceral of beats is the beating of our hearts. That pulse that moves us is translated through the beats that we create and listen to. Beats really allow us to capture what's inside. At least that's what the great ones achieve...
TRUE SEXY IS… True 'sexy' can't be easily defined. It's subjective. It's something that you feel when it's in your presence. I think true 'sexy' has very little to do with physical appearance. It's an outward reflection of some internal energy.
MUSIC IS MY… Music is the artform that most closely mimics our emotions. Music is what our feelings sound like. Music is my most easily accessible retreat at times. Other times, it is a connective tool that allows me to reach a certain place or person.
ART DOES NOT… have to be explained, only felt.
MY NIGHTS ARE… unpredictable. I've done well to create a lifestyle that allows me to use the night as my canvas. I am most productive at night and most of the ideas that I come up with are executed at night. I prefer interacting with others at night. I'm semi-nocturnal, so it's fair to say that my nights are usually active.

THESE 3 TURN ME ON…In a woman, her ability to create, perform, and excel are my 3 main turn-ons. In life, my ability to create, perform, and excel are my 3 main turn-ons.

SELF-KNOWLEDGE …I've got knowledge of self and coloring books on my shelf.
ENOUGH OF …I've had enough of the generally accepted principles of branding and presenting art. I'm ready for a new solution for artists and creatives to present their art and sustain a career. One that doesn't involve ill-suited corporate ads and sponsorship.
MY CREATIVITY IS… my most valuable asset.

NEW PROJECTS FOR 2011? I'm currently co-curator and show writer/interviewer for a series of live music showcases hosted in a 1920's former paper warehouse in Hoboken, NJ. We call it Live At The Loft and each show can be viewed at www.liveattheloftshow.com
Look forward to a couple of publishing projects that I have been working on for the last 2 years, as well as a space dedicated to photography and vintage printing. If I'm not being too ambitious, there may be a house of antiques in my sights as well.

Shouts to my OGs and informal mentors Jerry Gant, Jamel Shabazz, and Kenyan Paris Lewis who have shared words of infinite wisdom and have shown me through action that this life and my aspirations are attainable. Many a relationship has been lost to the temptations of summertime. With the coming of this season and its sun rays, clothing becomes optional, sexuality is in abundance, and extended daylight leads to balmy nightlife, often at the expense of a long-term love. On the flipside, summertime is also when love connections are made. Nothing says summer like a humid day, and locking eyes with your dewy skinned soulmate for the first time, even if it only lasts for a season…or a night.

With this theme in mind, and with summertime officially upon us, Flwrpt & The Casual presents…RELATIONSHIP RAPS. This mix is a collection of ’90s hip-hop tracks, some obscure some familiar, all dealing in some way with the relationships between women and men. With each song, we tried to capture a distinct ’90s sound and essence, that somehow never crossed into mainstream consciousness, but played a large role in crafting the energy of the era. In the series' debut episode, CC visits the home of my good friends, Brooklyn singer/songwriter Sarah White & DJ Don Cuco and their beautiful daughters. Sarah and Rico were the first artist fam I had met when I moved to Brooklyn (they just moved here from Minneapolis a few months earlier). Sarah and I used to write for TRACE together and then we had so much to share that we started our own blog. Sarah is also a dope photographer, peep her work here. I've always been a huge fan of them as not only artists, but also as young parents grinding in New York to make their dream happen while raising a beautiful family. They are true inspiration!

If you're in New York, check out these two group shows both opening today in Brooklyn. Jamel Shabbaz needs no introduction, his 10th anniversary celebration of his legendary photo essay of New York (well, mostly Brooklyn) in the 80s 'BACK IN THE DAYS' going to be surely epic (powerhouse, Dumbo, BK). The other show, Ritual, will feature the Honeycomb Collective, some of the hottest artists from South America, Europe, Australia and the US, including my homies Alice Mizrachi, Free 5 (you can check the wall we did a couple of weekends ago below) and Trystan Bates, founder of Honeycomb. I've seen some of the work from the show, it's going to be hot (Causey Contemporary Gallery, Williamsburg, BK).
